Water Fasting

Pure water fasting is an ancient and inherently natural practice crossing all cultures and of all species of man. It activates cleansing and repair and provides rebalancing to many of the human body’s own systems.

It is activated by ceasing caloric intake to near zero, whilst consuming water only.

This directs the body to respond in the only way it knows how. It must use up the easy to access energy first. Once this glucose and glycogen is exhausted over the period of hours or days it can switch over to fasting ketosis where its fuel source is now redirected toward fat.

Provided proper hydration is maintained a healthy body is usually able to complete this journey without discomfort. Once in fasting ketosis with insulin now reduced, the body’s energy is sourced from its own perfect keto macros – body fat and some proteins being reprocessed via autophagy.

The practice has been used to clean the body and repair, as well as to reconnect with spirit or consciousness. The states experienced by practitioners often speak of heightened perspectives, clarity and connection. Or a deep appreciation of nature and how intimately we are entwined. The act of water fasting is also used as a devotional offering of sacrifice of ones own self into the fire of digestion for a chosen cause.

What are some of the effects of water fasting?

There are numerous positive changes that can occur during an extended water fasting program. In the visible realm, they include weight loss, skin rejuvenation, and eye brightness. In the non-visible realm, most people witness states of exceptional clarity and focus, loss of procrastinating tendencies, reduced inflammation, and deep states of well-being relaxation, and connectedness. During water fasting the body starts a range of natural processes and healing cycles of detoxification.

What can you do to prepare?

Ideally, spend a few days eliminating carbohydrates from your diet. This will both ease and speed up the process of entering ketosis. If you plan to drop caffeine during your fast do it well prior to minimise headaches. Your last meals should focus on low carb high fibre to aid digestive processes into the fast. But won’t I die if I stop eating?

With water fasting, you don’t technically stop eating. Our body switches over its eating function via the liver to burn our fat reserves. Depending on your preparation and metabolic flexibility it can take 2-4 days of water fasting to enter this regenerative state of ketosis and to be in full-fat-burning repair mode. On average the body will burn approximately 200 grams of pure stored body fat per day. Water fasting is the gold standard for weight loss.

But don’t you get hungry?

Hunger is not linear nor exponential. It comes in waves and more often around meal times. Hunger in the tummy more generally disappears completely by days 3-4 of a water fast. Can you eat or drink anything?

Yes, as long as it’s water! The exceptions are herbal and black tea and black coffee (if necessary), apple cider vinegar, and a little lemon juice. It is essential that you stay in the ‘water fasted state’. The body will switch out of this crucially important fasted state with even a tiny spike in sugars or carbohydrates. Even natural sweeteners can sometimes trick the body out of this state.

How do you break a fast?

How you break your water fast can be very important. The process is dictated by how long you have fasted. Breaking a water fast of just 24-48hrs is mostly easy. Breaking short fasts with fruit is one path or maintain ketosis by carefully breaking with with low carb veg and fats. Either way take it slowly, less is more. How often can you water fast?

Intermittent style fasting of up 16-20hrs between wholesome meals can be maintained almost indefinitely. A 48-60hr fast more generally suits a once-per-week or fortnight schedule before repeating. Longer fasts of 5-10days would most commonly not exceed once a month, or once per season.

For deep fasting journeys of 2-5+ weeks, most practitioners suggest once or twice a year feels right. Remember it’s a personal journey and responsibility. Listen to your body and take your personal health situation into consideration. Regular shorter fasting periods over the long term often appear as effective as longer, less frequent fasts.
